Desserts & Treats
Sweet traditions that make a visit irresistible
Barcelona and its surroundings boast a rich culinary heritage, and no meal is complete without indulging in a sweet treat. From the comforting simplicity of churros with chocolate to the iconic crema catalana, Catalonia offers a variety of desserts for everyone.
Churros con Chocolate: A Beloved Tradition
Churros are a beloved and very popular treat across all of Spain, although their exact origin is debated. These deep-fried, golden dough sticks are often enjoyed dipped in rich, velvety chocolate. Served piping hot, churros con chocolate are a favourite breakfast or snack, especially on chilly mornings or after a fun evening out. The best churros are found in specialised churrerías, where they are freshly made.
Crema Catalana: A Sweet Icon
Often compared to France’s crème brûlée, this custard-based dessert is flavored with lemon and cinnamon, creating a lighter and zestier taste. Topped with a layer of caramelised sugar, its satisfying crunch contrasts with the creamy texture underneath. Traditionally served on Saint Joseph’s Day, crema catalana has become a year-round favourite in Barcelona and beyond.
Ensaimadas: A Taste of Sweet Simplicity
Originally from Mallorca, ensaimadas have found their way into Catalan bakeries, where they’ve become a staple pastry. These coiled, fluffy delights are dusted with powdered sugar and can be filled with ingredients like cream, chocolate, or cabello de ángel (a sweet pumpkin jam). They’re perfect for breakfast or a mid-afternoon snack, paired with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate.
Turrón: A Spanish Christmas Tradition
Turrón, a nougat made from toasted almonds, honey, and sugar, is a classic Christmas treat enjoyed throughout Spain. Catalonia embraces this tradition wholeheartedly, with both hard (turrón duro) and soft (turrón blando) varieties widely available. While it’s popular during Christmas, artisanal turrón can now be found year-round in some specialty shops, making it a delicious souvenir or snack no matter the season.
