Cava & the Art of Vermut

Exploring the History, Rituals, and Passion Behind Catalonia’s Iconic Drinks

Barcelona´s drink culture is as rich and diverse as its cuisine, offering a mix of tradition, craftsmanship, and modern twist. From the world-renowned sparkling wine of Cava to the local ritual of sipping vermut, Catalonia has a long-standing appreciation for beverages that bring people together and celebrate the region’s heritage.

Cava: The Sparkling Wine of Catalonia

Cava, a sparkling wine that originated in the Penedès region of Catalonia, is perhaps the most iconic drink to emerge from the region. Produced using the traditional méthode champenoise, the same technique used to create Champagne, Cava is crafted primarily from indigenous Spanish grape varieties, such as Macabeo, Xarel·lo, and Parellada.

Unlike its French counterpart, Cava is made in a wide variety of styles, from brut to sweet, and is typically less expensive than Champagne. The heart of Cava production lies in the town of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, where numerous wineries and cava cellars offer tours, tastings, and a deep dive into the history of this celebrated sparkling wine. A visit to the region allows to learn about the meticulous process of cava production and enjoy some of the finest bottles straight from the source.

Vermut: The Catalan Pre-Lunch Ritual

While Cava is a celebratory drink, vermut (vermouth) is an essential part of Spanish social life. Imported by the Italian Perucchi in 1860, it was in Barcelona where vermut was first produced, making Catalonia the birthplace of Spanish vermouth.

Typically enjoyed as a pre-lunch drink, vermut can be served with a slice of orange, olive, or lemon peel. Made from white wine infused with botanicals, it comes in red (richer) or white (lighter and sweeter) versions.

Catalonia’s Local Wines: A Sip of Tradition

Local wines reflect the distinct characteristics of Catalonia's diverse landscapes, where soil, climate, and tradition come together to shape each bottle. Whether it's a crisp white from Penedès, a full-bodied red from Priorat, or a coastal wine from Empordà, Catalan wines offer a true taste of the region. Exploring them through tastings at local wineries provides an authentic glimpse into the area's rich wine culture.
